The Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA) announces the release of the fourth issue of the revitalized White Pine Series of Architectural Monographs, a historic industry publication favored by many. The revitalized Monographs’ fourth issue: Portsmouth, New Hampshire—An Early American Metropolis, revives the 1921 Volume of the original series, exploring the history and role of how this seaport city contributed to Eastern White Pine’s popularity. Building its reputation since the 17th Century for its architectural use of Eastern White Pine, readers are taken back in time to explore Portsmouth’s industrious beginnings as a bustling shipping hub. Being situated on the Piscataqua River, originally serving as the closest year-round, ice-free port for European traders, was a clear advantage for Portsmouth’s function when it came to the distribution of Eastern White Pine. And while Portsmouth played a major role in moving Eastern White Pine across the ocean, it is this coastal city’s own incorporation of white pine elements that are still celebrated today.
“This most recent issue not only captures the Monographs’ rich history, but it also offers a refreshing new perspective on how far things have come,“ says Jeff Easterling, President of NELMA. “It is our hope that this issue starts to convey the importance of preserving history, through both protecting historic structures made with Eastern White Pine and sharing interesting stories of the past.”
Actively encouraging architects, designers, and building professionals to become involved in preserving this aspect of the lumber industry’s history; NELMA is looking for industry experts to share their knowledge and experiences of working with Eastern White Pine. Ideas can be sent to: monographs@EasternWhitePine.org. To get a free copy of Portsmouth, New Hampshire — An Early American Metropolis, visit www.EasternWhitePine.org.
