| Bark Measurement Tool for Wood Packaging Now Available from NELMA | 2009-05-28 |
NELMA is pleased to announce the development and availability of a Bark Measurement Tool specifically for its Export Wood Packaging Material Facilities to assist packaging personnel in determining compliance with the recently-implemented bark restrictions, now in effect under the revised 2009 ISPM 15 Standard. As previously announced, the 2009 Standard restricts the amount of bark that may be present on lumber and timbers utilized in export wood packaging and will be part of the inspection procedures beginning June 1.
As a reminder, the bark restrictions are as follows:
► Less than 3cm in width, regardless of length, or
The Bark Measurement Tool is exactly 3cm in width for use as a quick visual to indicate if the size of the bark exceeds the maximum allowed by the Standard.
► If greater than 3cm in width, the total surface area of an individual piece of bark must be less than 50 square cm in size.
For areas of bark greater than 3 cm, use the Bark Measurement Tool’s ruler portion for measuring the length and width to calculate overall size in square centimeters. And for further visual use, the total area of the tool is 50 square centimeters.
A complementary Bark Measurement Tool is being mailed to each NELMA WPM facility the first week of June, with additional Tools available from the NELMA Inspector at their next inspection visit. In the meantime, please contact NELMA (phone: 207-829-6901 or email: info@nelma.org) should you wish to order additional copies.
