Bronze Hammer Trophy goes to Stratton Lumber in Dimension Competition2009-10-19

By the closest of margins, Stratton Lumber Company took top honors in the 2009 Dimension Lumber Graders Competition, held Saturday, October 10 at Moose River Lumber Company in Jackman, Maine.   A crisp, sunny New England-style autumn day prevailed for the 25 graders that participated in this 7th annual NELMA event.   Each contestant was judged on their ability to correctly grade 50 sample boards within a 5 minute time limit.   Experience with Eastern Spruce and Balsam Fir, coupled with a good understanding of the National Grading Rules (NGR) for No.1, No. 2, No. 3, and Economy grades were the keys to finishing high in the final scores.

Jamie Hobbs of Stratton Lumber Company won the individual grading title, a dramatic improvement over his 19th place finish in 2008.   Only 2 points separated the top 6 places.   The Top 6 finishers for 2009 were:

1. Jamie Hobbs – Stratton Lumber Company    (19th in 2008)
2. Shawn Lyon – Pleasant River Lumber Company    (16th in 2008)
3. P.J. Chaisson – Moose River Lumber Company    (New to Competition)
4. Chris Lowery – Pleasant River Lumber Company    (5th in 2008)
5. Bernard Isabel – Fontaine Inc.    (6th in 2008)
6. Greg Silver – Stratton Lumber Company    (15th in 2008)

In the team championship, Stratton Lumber Company took home the “Bronze Hammer” Trophy, their second championship in the past 7 years. (Last won in 2004).   Only 3 points separated the top 4 teams as noted in the final results, listed below:

1. Stratton Lumber Company (62 points)
2. Pleasant River Lumber Company (61)
3t. Fontaine Inc. (59)
3t. Moose River Lumber Company (59)

“The 50 sample boards included a variety of characteristics important to NGR grade determination, with some emphasis placed on the recognition of “skip” as a manufacturing defect”, according to Marc Moore, NELMA’s Director of Inspection Services.   Marc went on to mention that these competitions are a great way for the Association to provide additional lumber grader training away from the hectic pace of the day-to-day mill operation.

NELMA would like to extend a special thank you to Jeff Desjardins, Moose River Lumber Company’s Mill Manager, and his staff for hosting the 2009 competition, which included a buffet lunch and awards presentation at the Four Seasons Restaurant in Jackman, Maine.

Eastern White Pine VS. Radiata Pine. Learn about these two species in a side by side comparison. Who will be victorious?

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20.  NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.

In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program.  We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
