| Australia Changes Rule for Plywood Use in Wood Packaging Materials! | 2010-01-11 |
The Australian requirement for plywood/veneer used only as packaging material with imported goods has changed, according to a recent year-end announcement. Australia no longer requires a “Newly Manufactured Plywood Declaration” for plywood/veneer packaging material. This means that the previous Australian regulation that required plywood to have been manufactured 90 days prior to the shipment of wood packaging that contained plywood is no longer in effect. However, the “Packing Declaration Form” will remain necessary to send with shipments and has been revised. Click here to view/download this revised form. The new rule is effective immediately.
This is good news for U.S. shippers to Australia using boxes, crates, skids, and other wood packaging materials that include plywood. The previous aggravation of using alternative composites or finding plywood less than 90 days since manufacture should be a thing of the past. With the exception of the continued need to supply the Packing Declaration Form, shipping to Australia should be the same as to all other countries that enforce the IPPC ISPM 15 Standard.
The Notice further states that AQIS will monitor the risks associated with plywood/veneer packing through its current “Import Clearance Effectiveness Surveys” and may periodically target surveillance for packaging to verify that risks are being adequately managed.
These changes were published in the AQIS Notice to Industry 61/2009—Documentation requirements for the clearance of imported cargo. To view the complete Notice click here. | |

Eastern White Pine VS. Radiata Pine. Learn about these two species in a side by side comparison. Who will be victorious?
Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program. We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
