NELMA's 2010 Dimension Graders Competition Held at Stratton Lumber2010-11-01

NELMA’s 2010 Graders Competition for its Dimension Lumber Mills was held October 9, hosted by Fontaine Inc. at their Stratton Lumber Company facility in Stratton, Maine.  Twenty-one graders from four of the Association’s dimension lumber manufacturers participated in this year’s 8th annual event.    Each grader utilized their training and expertise to judge 50 boards based on one of four grades (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, or Economy) from the National Grading Rule, all within a 5-minute time limit.

In the individual competition, Tom Wellington of Pleasant River Lumber came out on top as the 2010 winner, followed by a trio of Fontaine Inc. graders, Bernard Isabel in second place, Jonathon Brault in third, and Jean-Pierre Blais in 4th.  Greg Silver of Stratton Lumber finished in fifth place.   More than $500 in cash prizes was distributed to the individual competition winners.   In a close battle for the team championship, Pleasant River Lumber captured the Bronze Hammer Trophy by edging Fontaine Inc., 70 to 69, based upon the top two scores from each team. NELMA would like to congratulate each grader that participated in this year’s event and give a special thank you to the personnel at Stratton Lumber for their hard work in making this another successful and enjoyable opportunity for lumber graders to come together to discuss and learn more about their profession!

Eastern White Pine VS. Radiata Pine. Learn about these two species in a side by side comparison. Who will be victorious?

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20.  NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.

In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program.  We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
