During their annual Loggers Expo in May, 2007, the Northeastern Loggers’ Association of Old Forge, NY, held an Awards Banquet in Brewer, Maine where several Industry Leaders were recognized for outstanding contributions and achievements. Among the award recipients was NELMA member, Hancock Lumber Company of Casco, Maine – recognized as Outstanding Sawmill Operator.
According to NELA President John Caveney and Vice President Mel Lewis, “Since Hancock Lumber was founded in 1848, it has built a reputation as one of Southern Maine’s most successful businesses. In addition to its sawmill operation and retail business, Hancock Land Company, Hancock Lumber’s sister company, owns more than 40,000 acres of timberland throughout Maine, which it manages for eastern white pine. Hancock Lumber has become a powerful steward of the environment in Maine. “
Kevin Hancock told an interviewer recently “we are very serious about our role as caretakers. We protect the environment in many ways simply by staying business and thoughtfully using the land we own. We are also proud to be working with wood, and producing products that are grown and manufactured in Maine, and also good for the environment".

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program. We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
