The annual Fall Golf Tournament and Board of Directors’ meeting of the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA) was held September 20 & 21 at York Harbor, Maine. More than 70 golfers enjoyed a picture-perfect New England fall day at the Ledges Golf Club to open the 2-day meeting event. Those that enjoyed the day on the links reconvened with additional meeting attendees at York Harbor Inn for a late afternoon of business and an evening of camaraderie with industry peers. The business session was an optional short-course on “Managing Change in Family Business”, sponsored by NELMA’s legal counsel, Bernstein, Shur. The evening’s reception and dinner concluded the first day’s activities, where the top finishers of the tournament were announced. Top place went to the foursome of Jason Brochu and Chris Brochu of Pleasant River Lumber, and Paul Lennon and Chris Jacobson of LUA. Second place team winners were Tom and Peter Richardson of Crobb Box, Mike Levesque of Fraser Timber, and Chris Fitzgerald of Seaboard International. Third place went to the EnerNOC team of Tyler Gill, Dirk Endicott, Jon Hartnet, and Jim Pietras.
The next morning, the meeting of the Board of Directors was called to order by Chairman Tom Jenkins of Old Town Lumber, who introduced guest speaker, Paul Jannke, Senior Vice President, Wood and Timber Information for Resource Information Systems Inc. (RISI). Paul presented RISI’s “2008 Economic and Industry Forecast” and fielded numerous questions regarding realistic wood industry expectations for next year and beyond. The Board’s agenda included a review and discussion of the performance of NELMA’s current inspection programs, reports from the Marketing and Advisory Committee Chairman from their recent meetings, and a final review of proposed revisions to the grade rules for Eastern White Pine, specific to “unsound wood” interpretations. Randy Caron, NELMA’s Treasurer, reviewed the current financial report for the Association in addition to the proposed 2008 calendar year budget, which were both approved by the Board of Directors. An update on activities being undertaken by the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports regarding Canada’s ongoing violations to the ’06 Softwood Lumber Agreement was presented by Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the Coalition. The meeting concluded with an exciting preview of events to be conducted at next year’s NELMA 75th Anniversary Convention, to be held April 10-12, 2008 in New York City. | |

Eastern White Pine VS. Radiata Pine. Learn about these two species in a side by side comparison. Who will be victorious?
Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
In addition to the quality control inspection audits we conduct at lumber manufacturers to ensure that on-grade Eastern White Pine products are meeting the needs of consumers, NELMA develops and distributes an array of technical information and unique promotional materials via our member-driven marketing program. We encourage you to browse through the pages of this website and discover why Eastern White Pine is the very best choice when wood is considered, both environmentally sustainable and application versatile.
