| NELMA Releases Third Issue of the White Pine Monographs Series in November | 2008-10-29 |
The first feature, Weathering Island Living With Eastern White Pine, explores local Peaks Island builder Harvey Johnson’s preference to use Eastern White Pine in the renovation of his cottage. Eastern White Pine’s natural waxy rot resistance performs well against the excessive moisture and wind that comes with living on an island, and by using Eastern White Pine siding, Harvey is able to achieve an unusual smooth-looking aesthetic. Sustaining Warmth in a New Island Home looks at ancient and modern applications of Eastern White Pine, that provides proficient use of limited space, energy consumption and a welcoming atmosphere. Kaplan Thompson Architects was able to construct a compact living space to appear grand in scale, saving the homeowner insulation costs. Regardless of the season, the natural beauty of Eastern White Pine adds warmth to the interior of this summer retreat.
Using Eastern White Pine for its consistency and character, Great Blue Heron and Steven’s Sawmill and Construction maximized the interior charm of an award winning filmmakers home. Living on Islands Edge with Eastern White Pine features a cliff-side home on a tiny island’s ancient mountaintop. Though 50 feet of the house is solid glass from floor to ceiling, Eastern White Pine accents the door and window trim. Adding to the homes breath-taking views, is a pickle-finished ceiling that creates a soft look to a very modern looking home.
The final feature, One Island Man’s “Love for the Wood” spotlights a Prince Edward Island historical landmark restored and preserved using Eastern White Pine. Raeford Waite of RW Woodworking & Custom Milling has a special appreciation for Eastern White Pine, and it shines through his authentic craftsmanship. Using style and technique, Raeford mills Eastern White Pine wood stock to restore heritage projects and maintain historical landmarks.

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
