Material was thoughtfully covered to help the students make a quicker and smoother transition to become effective graders. Marc Moore added, “The workshop is designed to prepare students in all aspects of Eastern White Pine grading. The course also helped students develop an appreciation for their direct impact on log recovery and grade recovery in their future roles as graders at their respective mills.”

NELMA recently held its traditional Eastern White Pine Grader Workshop on October 21-23, hosted by Madison Lumber Mill in West Ossipee, New Hampshire. This three-day workshop, sponsored by the NELMA Institute, provided practical information and procedures for the grading of Eastern White Pine Boards. Instruction was led by NELMA’s Director of Inspection Services, Marc Moore, and Lumber Inspector, Don Pendergast, who led the class of 16 through a balance of classroom and practical instruction that introduced all of the concepts of Eastern White Pine grading under the NELMA rules.

Founded in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturer's Association (NELMA) is one of seven lumber rules writing agencies in the U.S. accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) to write grade rules that are certified as conforming to the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS20. NELMA is the official author and administrator of the grading rules for Eastern White Pine, in particular.
