Based on my background research there didn’t seem to be any old-growth stands on this canoe route – there wasn’t any marked on the @friendsoftemagami map, nothing mention in the book I referenced 7 posts ago, and it’s not in a park or conservation reserve so no management statement documenting ecological values. Anyway I don’t know how we properly define these things but on the last portage of the trip I was struck my what to my non-arborist eyes look like some pretty big white pines. ~Requiem for a Giant~🌺🌲 On our drive to Temagami on Friday we pulled over for a short bushwhack off Hwy 11 to find what Michael Henry and Peter Quinby’s book Ontario’s Old-Growth Forests describes as one of the most remarkable pine trees you can see in Ontario today, a 127 cm DBH behemoth between 300 and 500 years old. We located the tree, but found that it’s been snapped off about 15 to 20 meters up. After those centuries, I wonder what happened to it in the 10 years since the book was published. Finishing up rebuilding of this cornice. The biggest challenge was to take all the ups and downs the building has and make four straight lines that connect and then to set all of the trim to that, while keeping the roof pitch (fairly) consistent. By adding outlooks to each rafter end we were able to both form those lines and give extra solid nailing surface for both our crown moulding and our roof sheathing board, which will serve to keep our drip edge in the correct spot while not covering the crown.
